AYL Under 14s. Round 15 v Blacktown Win 9-1

The 14s sit 10 points ahead of 2nd place on the ladder with a game in hand and the challenge is to ensure they turn up and compete each week and stay motivated.

We travelled to Blacktown and were greeted by a wonderful set up and a beautiful morning.

The first half went to plan with our passes hitting the targets, and the boys playing smart measured football. We went into half time 8 nil up.

The coaches asked the boys to stick to the plan and their structure.

Unfortunately, this did not occur. Blacktown came out strong and competed and Sutherland went away from the slick passing game of the first half. The boys became lazy and the game intensity dropped.

This was a game of 2 halves with the first being an example of why we sit so far ahead, the second – less said the better.

There is a bigger challenge this week as we travel to the Central Coast and the boys will have to play much better to be successful here.

Goals: Daniel P- 5, Louis Ryan, Daniel B, Callum.

Sutherland AYL Under 14s

Round 16 v Central Coast Win 1-0

Another tough game against the highly rated Central Coast. We travelled to Pluim Park hoping to keep our undefeated record intact.

It was clear from the start Central Coast were up to the challenge and they used the entire park employing a passing game that had us on the hop. Again, and again they pressed but the back 4 kept them out with solid defence.

We needed to take our chances but more patience and better control in front of goal was needed.

Daniel P connected with a good cross after a great passing interchange down the right side and we went to half time 1 nil up.

The second half was an arm wrestle with Central Coast desperate to equalise. They pressed time and gain and we were lucky to keep them out.

Certainly not our best game, and we need to keep our intensity for the full 60 minutes and not get lazy. That said record intact but the next 3 weeks will test us against quality opposition.

Goal: Daniel P

Sutherland AYL u15 v Central Coast

Score: 3-1 win

Scorers: Michael, Tim, Chris

A beautiful morning on the Central Coast after Sharkies had belted the Roosters / Lions beat the All Blacks  the boys were playing in their PJs looking for the trifecta. After sustained pressure from CC we attack with a great Hudson corner & a goal to Michael. After more CC pressure we break & get another corner with a goal to Tim.  A great half of football by Sutho with strong defence & lots of attack to take a deserved 2-0 lead in at HT.

A nervy start to 2nd half with Sutho  giving away lots of ball in the middle & upfront & creating unnecessary pressure for us. After sustained pressure CC got a deserved goal back. Eventually we got back in the game & a great run from Ollie & we get our 1st corner but Chris heads over. A great save from CC goalie denies Tim a one on one. A wonderful run from Sam gets us a another corner & another great corner from Hudson allows Chris to nail the header for a wonderful 3-1 victory giving CC their 1st defeat of the season.  Well done boys with some great football in 1st half & later part of the 2nd half. A great defensive effort in 2nd half to restrict CC to 1 goal.

U16 AYL. SSFA 1 – Central Coast FC 3

It was always going to be a tough match against Central Coast FC who are currently undefeated and leading the competition by 16 points.  Our boys have been training well lately so we were hoping for an upset.

The boys took a little while to settle in and at times made the opposition work hard.  Unfortunately, a couple of early lapses in our defence allowed Central Coast to make the most of goal scoring opportunities and they led 2-0 into the break.

Second half, following an inspiring talk from Stefan the boys settled into a more disciplined play.  Our passing improved and much stronger defence held the opposition to a much tighter match.  Central Coast’s Goal Keeper played the game well out of his area, acting as a sweeper.  With some clever passing leading up, Ky slotted one into the back of the net and surprised the Central Coast’s Keeper who is not used to conceding goals!

Thank you to Stefan from the U14s for Coaching the boys while Dragan and Stef were away – your instruction and guidance was much appreciated.

U16 AYL Final Report for 2017

What a wonderful feeling to finish the Season with a well-deserved win against Northern Suburbs.  The boys ‘lifted’ and gave a solid performance to jump Northern Suburbs on the ladder and finish 5th overall.  A special thank you to Sam Wild and Daniel Jordan from U15s for helping us out and securing the win.

It has been an absolute privilege to be involved with the boys this year.  A wonderful bunch of young gentleman who have demonstrated qualities of respect and good sportsmanship. They have worked hard throughout the Season and have hopefully enjoyed the journey.

A big thank you to Dragan for Coaching these boys.  Many espouse the theory ‘development is more important than winning’ but Dragan truly lives it.  He is a thorough gentleman and I know his caring and patient nature has had a positive impact on our boys.

Also, thank you to Stef for assisting Dragan – the apple doesn’t fall from the tree!  The boys all love and appreciate the time and effort you have put in.  You have been a fantastic role model for our boys.

Thank you to our amazing parents for your help this year.  Representative Football is a significant step for our boys and having supportive parents to assist with getting the boys to training and games is paramount to their success.  The encouragement and support you have shown the team throughout the Season has been greatly appreciated.

Sadly, this is the last Season for our boys at SSFA and hopefully they will continue to improve and develop their football whether it be at a Club level or otherwise.  Many friendships have been forged through a love and passion for the game and it was evident the boys wore the Sutherland Shire uniform with pride.  Team sports provide our boys with a natural community, working together, and trusting one another and hopefully the boys have realised the importance of this.

To Jon and Jeff, many thanks for your help and guidance throughout the Season. Cath Beardsley (Team Manager)

BATHURST CUP 2018 – AYL U13

The Bathurst Cup is an invaluable experience for any team but perhaps more so for an U13’s side. Our team is newly built from opposing club sides as well as the SAP program – this is a time when all the rivalry that goes with years of competing against each other can finally be buried. Friendships are forged, and a mutual trust is built hopefully setting the boys up for a great season ahead.

The boys played 3 games on the Saturday with convincing wins in all of them earning them 1st place in their pool. Sunday is always a little difficult to back-up, but the boys should be proud of themselves as they lifted again from the day before to go into the grand final undefeated.

Our Grand Final opponents, Woden Weston Black came out a different side from the previous day and it was a tough battle on a wet and muddy field. WWB slotted a goal in moments before half time and so for the first time in the tournament we were behind 1:0. At half time Brian gave the boys an inspirational chat asking them to be patient and the results would follow. We were finally rewarded with a goal from Jordan two minutes before full time equalising the game 1:1. Golden goal rule now applied for a nail biting ten minutes. Although we were probably the stronger side a goal eluded our boys and the game ended in a draw.

A thrilling penalty shootout ensued resulting in a final winning score of 1:1 PSO: 3-2. A shootout is not for the faint-hearted and well done to all the boys (and parents) for staying calm and composed.  Results are probably secondary to the entire tournament experience, so it was certainly ‘icing on the cake’ for our boys to be named 2018 U13 Bathurst Cup Champions.

We could not be prouder of the boys for conducting themselves with such maturity and discipline on and off the field.  All the pre-season training is paying off with still plenty of room for improvement.  A big thank you to the parents for your support of the boys over this weekend.  We had every weather condition imaginable from searing heat to cold blustery rain, and your encouragement of the boys certainly helped them over the weekend.

Finally, a massive thank you to Brian for giving your time to coach the boys over the tournament. Your motivation and guidance (and your funny quotes and jokes) all made the weekend a rewarding and enjoyable experience.

AYL U13. SSFA 2 V FOOTBALL SOUTH COAST 0
This was one of our ‘gutsiest’ performances to date against a quality opposition. There is no sure-win in the U13s competition and today was no exception.
Just two minutes into the match, Dylan made a break up the left side and crossed the ball perfectly to the 6-yard mark. Luke C was shaping to shoot when a FSC defender caught a foot to the ball and scored an own goal.
At half time the Coaches spoke about knocking the ball early and the importance of communication. The boys needed to continue working hard and stay confident.
7 minutes into the second half, Luke G switched the play from left back across to Ben on the right wing. Harry, waiting in the middle screamed for the ball and Ben was able to cross to him. Harry seized the opportunity and scored!
Because of sickness and injuries, our normally robust bench was down to Jordan, who was coming back from injury and Max, one of our Goal Keepers. With just over 10 minutes to go and leading 2-0, Harry and Ben were granted a well-deserved early mark and Jordan and Max were given a run.
The coaches were so impressed with the boys today. They gave 110% against a very physical and tenacious opposition and they reminded the boys to savour that winning feeling.
We are now sitting 2nd on the ladder after 14 rounds with the best defensive record in the competition. The boys are training well and chasing first place.
Well done boys – we are all enjoying watching good football! (Cath Beardsley)

It was fantastic to see our full squad return, ready to take on Gladesville Hornsby FA. The boys had prepared well throughout the week and were keen to continue their winning streak.
Gladesville played a defensive game for the first half and unfortunately, we failed to capitalise on a few scoring opportunities. The boys kept their concentration and held their shape. They continued to work hard, making sure they got to the ball first. Patience won over and in the 37th minute, Dylan scored. Will scored another two goals just a few minutes later securing a convincing win to Sutherland.
The work rate of the boys should be commended with yet another ‘clean sheet’ to add to the stats. They are playing so well as a team, supporting each other, and communicating.
Next week we take on the very physical MacArthur FA and we are all looking forward to a tough battle. Well done boys, keep up the good work.

AYL U13 – SSFA (4) v Nepean (0) – Saturday 30 June

There is something about a game under lights at our regular training pitch that brings out the best in the boys. Nepean are bottom of the ladder and occasionally our team tend to struggle against the weaker sides, but tonight was an exception. Will scored within the first 5 minutes, followed closely by another goal a few minutes later. The instructions from the Coach were clear: Concentrate, knock the ball early and move into a space. Just before half time Luke C was able to put another into the back of the net and we were able to go into half time feeling positive. The boys needed to continue playing unselfishly if we were to tie up the win.
Second half, the boys had most of the possession and plenty of scoring opportunities. Obviously, the boys have been watching plenty of World Cup Football and in the 47th minute Jordan made an incredible break up the sideline and cut it back perfectly to Dylan who didn’t waste a scoring opportunity. Well done to our defenders also, this was now our 9th clean sheet for the Season.
Stefan was really pleased with the boys’ performance tonight. They are playing good football and continue to work and train hard. Cath B

U16 AYL Grand Final Match Report : SSFA 3 v Football South Coast 2 (Extra Time)

On a beautiful sunny day at Valentine Sports Park , the top two AYL teams faced off in the much anticipated U16 AYL Grand Final, it was 1 v 2 the way it should be in a finals series.
The fixture is always a torrid affair with honours split during the competition rounds with one win a piece and one draw, however FSC got the better of Sutho in the major semi-final sending us into a do or die Final against Manly, which the boys won in the final minutes of extra time after a scorching volley from Ethan sent Sutho through to the BIG SHOW.

On Sunday we started off at cracking pace with Sutho dominating the first 20 min but as with most quality sides FSC held firm, even shocking Sutho by scoring first. FSC 1- 0

It didn’t last long as we hit back through a Bailee header after a great free kick from Bushy. The Sutho boys were still dominating but the FSC boys didn’t give an inch with both teams increasing the physicality to the point of boilover.

Our boys held their composure and played some inspiring football with every player contributing 100% but FSC struck again and it started looking like it might not be our afternoon. 2-1 down with about 10 min to go and we needed something special.

Ethan turned on edge of the box sailed past two defenders and deftly flicked the ball into the right corner of the net – SFFA 2-2. Game on.

At full time with the scores still locked its extra time, there’s an air of calm about the boys ….this could be ours, only 20 left in our AYL careers, the parents are all going crazy the crowd is pumped.

With half time looming Ethan drives hard into the box and as expected the FSC defender flies in and takes Ethan out, the referee doesn’t hesitate…..PENALTY.

On the stroke of half time Jett calmly steps up….. sends the keeper the wrong way…… Sutho 3-2

The remaining 10 min seem like an eternity by now the parents can barely watch as FSC pepper our goal with deadly free kicks but Daniel is equal to the task and tips a number of shots over or onto the bar, the boys stay strong, hold on in the dying seconds and the U16 are Football NSW AYL Champions.

What a fantastic year, what away to finish our AYL careers.

Thank you to Jon and Stu for their expert guidance, when Craig was unavailable, thank you Geoff / Ethan and Tony for your guidance in past years, to the wonderful parents who celebrated every victory and picked the boys up after every defeat, thank you for all your support.

To the master coach Craig who guided our boys through the toughest season of their lives, we couldn’t have done it without you…thank you, your pre game talk was inspirational and really touched the boys.

And to the 17 wonderful young men that provided us with so much entertainment and some frustration, you played beautiful football but above all played in a way that made us all very proud. Thank you boys and congratulations. Champions forever. Darren

U13 AYL Grand Final. SSFA V Central Coast FC. Loss 1 – 2 (extra time)

Well that’s a wrap for the 2018 Season!

Unfortunately, today wasn’t our time but the boys should hold their heads high. They have shown so much heart and courage and we are all so extremely proud.

The boys have developed in many ways, on and off the field from the first training session to the Grand Final. They are an awesome bunch of kids that train incredibly hard and play for each other. They have had fun doing what they love, and after all, that’s what it’s all about.

U13s can be a difficult transition with many of the boys learning to adapt to playing on a full-size pitch. Also, learning the nature of representative football and all the responsibilities and expectations that go along with the privilege of playing for Sutherland Shire. The boys have handled all of this in their stride with maturity and respect.

A very big thank you to our parents this year. Having supportive parents to assist with driving the boys to training and games is important to the team’s success. It’s been heartening to see so many parents allow their kids to simply enjoy themselves because they recognise that more than any trophy, the life skills team sports develop are the real payoff. Thank you also for your help with BBQ and Canteen duties as well as the field setups. You have shown a wonderful community spirit!

To our Coaches Stefan and Brian, the boys and parents thank you for giving so much of your time to develop our boys’ abilities on and off the pitch. The Coaches have encouraged the boys to listen and work hard. They have instilled in the boys the importance of respect and fair play for their teammates, the opposition and officials. Also, for introducing them to experiences that will shape their development into future years and give them important life skills.

Thank you to Stefan Blazevic and Stuart Blake for stepping in to assist our boys to prepare for the finals, keeping them calm and focussed.

Finally, a big thank you to Jon Long and Jeff Stewart. Our team has been blessed to be part of a Club with such an emphasis on sportsmanship and player development above results. Your help and guidance throughout the year have been greatly appreciated.
